Get set for the ACT with free library classes

The Shawnee Public Library hosts a pair of free classes titled “Preparing for the ACT” for high school students at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, and again at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, in the Computer Training Center of the library, 101 N. Philadelphia Ave.

Participants will learn about the library database Learn-a-Test, which gives a chance for building test-taking skills prior to their testing day.

Opt in to OverDrive with help from library program

Shift into OverDrive with the Shawnee Public Library and its resources for downloadable resources, with an upcoming free computer class.

The library program “Opt in to OverDrive” takes place at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at the library, 101 N. Philadelphia Ave. 

The workshop is an opportunity for learning how to use the library’s downloadable content through the service OverDrive. Participants are encouraged to bring their mobile device so they get a hands-on chance to learn how to download materials with their own device.

Devices that can be used to download books from the library include eReaders, smartphones, computers or iPads.

Space is limited so registration is required to attend the programs.

Seniors can be part of the “Brain Games” in Shawnee

The Shawnee Public Library invites seniors to expand their horizons with the “Brain Games” computer class, at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, in the Computer Training Center of the library, 101 N. Philadelphia Ave.

Participants will explore several free websites that have interactive computer games designed to enhance brain activity, including the AARP and Yahoo! sites.

Space is limited in the computer lab, so registration in advance is required.

Fabulous Fiction Finds

Take a step back into the distant past -- or even the more recent past -- as you browse our FFF corner for August.  Historical fiction places you in a specific time period and lets your imagination wonder "what if...?"  Follow the author as the protagonist's story weaves through real events.  Who knows, it may even spark an interest for more research of the actual events that affected modern society.
