Norman West displaying baseball works by Mike Wimmer

The boys of summer have taken over part of Norman Public Library West, through the work of artist Mike Wimmer.

Wimmer’s collection of baseball-themed paintings is on display throughout the summer in the lobby of the library, 300 Norman Center Court. They focus on the legendary Babe Ruth and his career, a topic he also worked on with author Robert Burleigh in the book “Home Run: The Story of Babe Ruth,” a 1997 release by Harcourt Brace.

Wimmer, a former Norman resident who now lives in Oklahoma City, has an impressive resume for his artistic work. The Muskogee native painted several original portraits located inside the State Capitol Building, as well as in gallery exhibitions that have been shown throughout the world. He also contributed an ornament to the White House Christmas tree in 2008, a design that featured state legend Will Rogers as the face of Santa Claus.

Wimmer has illustrated numerous books and covers, including several collaborations with former Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating from 2002-06. In addition to illustrating “Home Run: The Story of Babe Ruth,” he also has worked on sports books like “Stealing Home: Jackie Robinson Against the Odds,” which he and Burleigh collaborated on for its 2007 release.
